Conflict Management

For a complete list of workshops on offer and an explanation as to how the Emotometrics process works, click here.

Overview

According to research findings, managers spend 24% of their time at work dealing with conflict. First line supervisors spent 30% of their time at work in conflict situations.

A certain degree of conflict is healthy and increases both the motivation and the productivity of employees. Excessive conflict and the inability of leaders and followers to handle conflicts effectively, lead to poor relationships, a toxic work environment, an unhappy
work force, unnecessary absenteeism and a decrease in productivity.

Who Should Attend?

Any person who deals with people on a daily basis and who dislikes or feels apprehensive about confrontation. Some people prefer harmony and are inclined to avoid conflict. This often aggravates the situation and it may develop into a bigger crises. Other people who are inclined to act impulsively and confrontational and who lack the necessary tact and diplomacy in their dealings with people, will also benefit.

It is also recommended for those whom Conflict Management Skills have been identified as a primary training need on completion of the Self-Awareness course.

Specific Outcomes

Each delegate will receive feedback with regard to his/her dominant conflict resolution style. There are five conflict resolution styles and few people are equipped to manage conflict in a win-win manner.

On completion of the course, a person should be able to:

  • Anticipate and prevent unnecessary conflict.
  • Prevent a conflict from becoming destructive.
  • Choose the appropriate approach to conflict management.
  • Prepare effectively for constructive conflict resolution.
  • Approach conflicts in both a constructive and objective manner.
  • Choose appropriate vocabulary in order to depersonalise conflict.
  • Cope effectively with their own emotions and the emotional behaviour of the other party.
  • Handle personal attacks, as well as the manipulative or aggressive tactics of the other party.
  • Manage conflicts with greater self-confidence and skill.
  • Master the ultimate win-win approach to conflict management and develop the flexibility to switch to other conflict resolution styles when necessary.
  • Discern when to avoid conflict, sometimes permanently and sometimes temporarily.

The course is based on behaviour modulation principles and includes case studies, written and practical exercises, video-excerpts of conflicts and role-plays. In order to maintain the attention of participants there is a variety of exercises and a balance between theory and practice.

Duration

2 days

There is a balance between lectures, discussion and practical sessions.
